Long-term barriers to global fertility convergence

Abstract After WWII, the demographic transition exhibited features of convergence between developing countries and forerunner with low fertility. Although today fertility is in majority countries, significant differences persist. In this article, I study club 190 over period 1950 to 2018. First, apply a novel econometric method for analysis clustering. find no evidence global convergence, classify into four clubs. further two clubs at beginning identify transitioning from high Second, interpret as feature long-term process economic development estimate an ordered probit model probability that country enters one three characterized by high, medium, barriers convergence. Here, focus on ancestral fundamental factors diversity development. Estimates show statistically inverted U-shaped relationship interpersonal population lower barriers, consistent literature also highlight genetic distance USA years since Neolithic agriculture cause higher decline.
